Steve Coppell will be the next coach of two-time champions for the upcoming season of Indian Super League (ISL).
“I am delighted to accept the position of head coach for ATKfor the coming season,” the British coach, who is also a former World Cupper, said on Monday. “ATK have a proud history in the ISL and I hope that with the hard work and skill, we can match the ambitions of our fans and everyone associated with the club,” the 62-year-old was quoted as saying in a press releases, issued by the franchise.
ATK will be the third in as many seasons for Coppell, who had earlier managed Kerala Blasters (2016-2017 season) and Jamshedpur FC (2017-2018 season).
ATK have been in a process of rebuilding the side after having finished ninth in the 10-team table last season. Although ISL champions are scheduled to play in the AFC Cup, it is a closed league, without any promotion and demotion.ATK’s experiment with the English set-up, after parting ways with Spanish partner Atletico Madrid failed to yield any desired result last season.
New coach Teddy Sheringham was forced to step down midseason following a string of poor results. Robbie Keane was elevated to a player-cum-manager position later on but the stop-gap arrangement failed to prevent them from suffering the most disappointing finish in four seasons.
“I am glad to welcome our new head coach Steve Coppell to the ATK family. It has been our effort to build an experienced and balanced side, which will be enhanced with Coppell joining the squad this season. One of the world’s most respected wingers and an exceptional manager himself, I am hopeful Steve will lead the way for ATK with his unique strategies and his enthusiasm,” ATK’s principal owner Sanjiv Goenka said. Coppell played for Manchester United as a winger from 1975 to 1983 and represented England in the 1982 World Cup in Spain.
